Dear Friends of Mayan Families,

February is already here, which means that in addition to ensuring our students are prepared to start off the new school year successfully, we are also welcoming our first groups of visitors in 2020! Last month, we had multiple sponsors come visit their students with family and friends, and in the coming months, we are excited to welcome more sponsors and groups who are committed to getting involved more directly with our work.

Our supporters play a crucial role in making our work possible, and our work is so intrinsically tied to the culture and communities we operate in. By organizing opportunities for our sponsors to visit us here in Guatemala, we hope to enable you to better understand the context, extent and importance of your support, as well as help you create a long-lasting relationship with the communities that you are so committed to impacting.

We have been working really hard to create a wide range of visit options to offer you in 2020, so that you can explore Guatemala with us and get your hands on rewarding projects within the Mayan communities where we work.

We are ready and excited for you to come and experience firsthand the work we do and join us in the beautiful Lake Atitlán region. We can’t wait to have you!

Steve & the Experience Team

"The Summer Experience trip was a perfect mix of experiencing the day to day efforts of Mayan Families, culture and sightseeing. I was amazed at the variety of outreach and assistance programs Mayan Families provides. I am so happy I was able to join the team on this journey.” - Jordan Baker, Summer Experience Participant 2019

After the amazing success of our Summer Experience trip last year, we are excited to announce that we have officially opened spots for our two Summer Experience trips this year!

Our Summer Experience program is an amazing way to experience Mayan culture, understand why we do the work we do and actively take part in our program efforts in the communities throughout the Lake Atitlán region.

In the course of the week-long trip, you’ll be able to bond with travelers of all ages and participate in a range of service and cultural activities.

So whether you are a solo traveler, a mother-daughter team, or a small group of friends, we invite you to join us! We’re running two trips this year, one from July 11-18 and one from August 8-15. Click here to learn more, or email us directly at to sign up for the trip today!

“You have to come in person to experience it firsthand. Bonding with the students I sponsor, visiting the communities and understanding how big the needs are, made a huge difference in the way I perceive the help I provide” - Melinda Jumper, Student Sponsor

At Mayan Families, we want our donors to truly feel part of our team. It’s important for us that our supporters come and visit us in person. It is a rewarding experience and an amazing opportunity for donors to understand and explore the local community and feel part of the change we are promoting.

For this reason, we have created various visit opportunities all year round to visit us. Whether you are coming to visit the student you sponsor, are a group that would like to plan a custom service trip or if you are simply looking for a cultural immersion experience, we have created programs to fit everyone’s needs, curiosities and interests.

These travel programs will help you understand the work we do at Mayan Families, but most importantly it will give you hands-on experience with traditional Mayan culture, as you embark on what could be a life-changing experience.

We believe that immersing yourself in a new and different culture can have a huge impact on the way you perceive and understand the world and its needs. We invite you to learn more about our different programs and come to visit us, our doors are open!
